Subject: Overlaying old paint
Date: Sat, 08 Mar 2003

I want to know if I have to strip the old paint off to bare wood to use your Uniflex 255*. Can I put CPES on over old paint that is in good shape? I have used Easypoxy paint over an under coat before. I want this paint job to last and can take time to do it right. I am painting only to boat hull and cabin sides. I like all your products they all easy to mix and work well in all applications. Thanks Ray V.

Ray,

Well, yes, you can apply CPES and UNIFLEX 255* over old paint, but it is generally not recommended. The reason is that the bond will be to the paint, not to the wood, so you are really just ending up with a wood-to-paint bond. If you go down to bare wood, you are creating an epoxy/polyurethane bond, which is FAR superior to any paint bond, and will justify the expense of using these polymer products on your hull and cabin sides.

Hope this is some help, and feel free to come back if you have additional questions.
