Subject: (protecting new) Pitch-Pine Windows and Doors
Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002

Dear Sir,
I am putting new Pitch-Pine windows and doors into my new home. Could you advise me on how to treat them. My preference is to use oil. I have heard of a product called "Dutch Oil", but know nothing about it.
In anticipation,
Yours sincerely,
Dermot

Oil is fine, but relatively high maintenance (cleaning and re-oiling at regular intervals). We have no particular preferences between the oils.

Beyond oiling your windows, what you do depends of what you want to achieve. To prevent the windows from rotting or the wood from deteriorating, you would coat all the windows with our CPES (Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer) before applying any kind of final finish. However, once the CPES is applied, the oiled finish is no longer a particularly good option, since the wood cannot now absorb the oil. Usually a UV resistant finish is applied over the CPES-treated wood, such as a UV urethane or a marine-grade varnish.

Come on back if you have further questions.
