Subject: Can Glovit Be used?
Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003

You referred to a product by the name of Glovit in an answer posted on your web site. A neighbor suggested I use that product to seal a concrete pond I want to put plants and fish in. However, I can't find any other information about it. Could you direct me to where I might be able to buy it? Could you also let me know whether he was correct in suggesting it. I intend to leave water in the pond year round. In Michigan that will mean exposure to freezing water in the Winter.

Thanks for your help.

Stephen M.

Stephen,

Glovit will work, although it will take 2 coatings at least to waterproof. It has the disadvantage of being fairly rigid and this means it will be subject to cracking under the expansion/contraction of the concrete during Michigan winter/summer cycles.

We would suggest instead that you consider our ELASTUFF 120. This is a 100% solids polyurethane coating that is commonly used to coat concrete in water-treatment plants. It take 2 coats for effective coverage, and it is 100% waterproof. And it never cures to a hard finish...it always has the flexibility to withstand concrete expansion/contraction. You can read more about this product here:

ELASTUFF 120 is a medium gray coating. Eventually it turns into a kind of mustard-brown due to UV light exposure. This in no way decreases the effectiveness of the coating, but it's not too pretty. This may or may not make a difference to you. There is a secondary coating, our totally UV-resistant Elasta-Tuff™ 6000-AL-HS, that effectively coats the ELASTUFF 120. It is available in several colors.

These coatings will give you a more effective waterproof coating for your pool than the epoxy. Both will be chemically neutral after they have cured. Feel free to come back if you have additional questions.
